Capacity Building for PeaceThe University for Peace (UPEACE) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to provide humanity with an institution of higher education for Peace. UPEACE fulfills this mandate by offering 11 MA programmes in fields related to Peace studies to a very diverse, select student body at the main campus in Costa Rica, through distance learning with global outreach, and through unique worldwide capacity building programmes for professionals and academics. Capacity building for peace is different from regular university education in two ways: (1) it reaches out to a wider audience of professionals, and (2) the trainings provide advanced skills for peace building, directly related to the specific context of the participants. UPEACE, with the support of the Government of the Netherlands, has implemented two ambitious programmes to strengthen the capacity of partner universities in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. Starting with the understanding that peace building can only be successful if implemented in all levels of society, UPEACE reaches out to train professionals. Through specially designed programmes, many professionals connect peace building skills to their expertise, which supports educators, researchers, the police force, diplomats, journalists, civil servants, NGO workers and many others in making a difference in their daily work. By using the expertise of the participants as the starting point, UPEACE transforms capacity building into capacity cooperation: trainers and trainees all learn from each other in an open, inclusive learning environment. This is further strengthened by including many different stakeholders in the trainings. In this way, academics, practitioners, researchers and other relevant actors connect their expertise and form relevant networks. Furthermore, UPEACE has a wide experience in providing short courses and training workshops to professionals all over Africa (through the Africa programme based in Addis Ababa), in Latin America, Middle East and Central and South Asia.
